Mesa Verde Day 2

The campsite.  I slept outside both nights underneath the stars.  It was so fun and relaxing, and only a bit cold.

Wethermill Mesa, the second main mesa after Chapin Mesa

San Juan Mountains again (?)

Long Canyon

I kept a stone from this area.

Step House, a very old alcove

Fossilized shrimp burrows according to a friend

Irrigation dam

Beautiful Long Canyon

Long House, the second largest cliff dwelling at Mesa Verde

Storage rooms

Original wood from Long House

A seep spring that turned into a mossy alcove

Various shots of Long House and Long Canyon

Water storage holes

Original wood cover to kiva.  This is the only remaining original wooden cover in the park!

A great shot due to light and shadows

Looking into the old kiva.  The black soot is from ceremonial fires in the kiva.

Can you count the fingers?  I count 6!  This was common due to inbreeding.

Panorama of Long House

See the white hand?

And more pithouses

A star-struck squirrel...and a fat one at that!

Posing.

This tunnel led to the tower...so cool!

More pithouses

Vista of Kodak House set inside Rock Canyon.  Apparently an American explorer stored his camera here, hence the name.

Long House.  The forest above had seen better days.
