Las Vegas & Grand Canyon

Built during the New Deal, the hydrolectric Hoover Dam spans the Black Canyon on the Arizona-Nevada border near Boulder City, NV, which is about 30 miles from Las Vegas.  The Hoover Dam controls flooding and provides irrigation to the nearby region.  You can see Lake Mead behind the dam, which is the largest reservoir and was formed by the Hoover Dam.  Between 10,000-20,000 workers, mostly white, completed the creation of the dam.  112 people died during the construction of Hoover Dam, due to drowning and poisoning.  The dam rises roughly 700 ft. above the Colorado River, depending on water depth at any given time.  To improve safety to the area after 9/11, the United States government build the Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge (completedin 2010) 1/4 mile down the river to bypass the actual dam.  The bridge rises 900 ft. above the Colorado River and is the 2nd highest bridge in the country.  Also, note how the water level has changed in Lake Mead.
